Bardugo's weakest Grishaverse installment yet and that is saying sth considering the previous title King of Scars which was a struggle to get through to since it was terribly paced and felt more like everyone else's book instead of Nikolai's even though it's meant to be Nikolai's duology。 Aside from sidelining its protagonist， it was also full of the typical clichés found in YA including the inevitable Mary Sue which took the form of Zoya。 But its lowest point has to have been the recycling of t Bardugo's weakest Grishaverse installment yet and that is saying sth considering the previous title King of Scars which was a struggle to get through to since it was terribly paced and felt more like everyone else's book instead of Nikolai's even though it's meant to be Nikolai's duology。 Aside from sidelining its protagonist， it was also full of the typical clichés found in YA including the inevitable Mary Sue which took the form of Zoya。 But its lowest point has to have been the recycling of the main antagonist from the original Grisha Trilogy which cheapened the experience of reading this book and took away from the impact that the first three books had on their readers。 On that note， I have to also say that the difference between how LB writes familiar characters in this book and how she wrote them in TGT is very palpable。 You can tell straight away that she isn't as emotionally invested in these same old stories an the characters as she was 10 years ago， which isn't her fault， but it is sth that she should have recognised addressed before going back to Ravka。 If you are a fan of the original trilogy and the SoC duology and you feel like you already had closure-skip this book。 If you are a tgt fan， it will just frustrate you， and if you are a SoC fan， it will make you anxious about the potential SoC 3 book。 The only people to whom I would reccomend this book and the duology overall are the same people who like the Star Wars prequels because that's what they are in relationship to their predecessors。 Bardugo makes no effort to mask the fact that these last two books have been a cash grab rather than a product of love and understanding for the characters and the readers who've grown attached to them over the years and keeping that in mind if you decide to skip this book you'll be better off。 。。。more

Don't recommend this book （or anything by this author） to anyone who is looking for diversity， fantasy that is not based on torturing women or just original fantasy。 The majority of the world is just a mix of cultural appropriation - from Slavic culture （especially Russian， and it's so bad you can see easily the author did 0 research and does not care about the fact that she just uses harmful stereotypes everywhere）， to Romani & Hindu culture。 Honestly， I've seen better made fantasy worlds （and Don't recommend this book （or anything by this author） to anyone who is looking for diversity， fantasy that is not based on torturing women or just original fantasy。 The majority of the world is just a mix of cultural appropriation - from Slavic culture （especially Russian， and it's so bad you can see easily the author did 0 research and does not care about the fact that she just uses harmful stereotypes everywhere）， to Romani & Hindu culture。 Honestly， I've seen better made fantasy worlds （and less xenophobic ones） made by bored 12 year olds in writing classes。Nothing in the book makes sense， it's just like the author forgot every single book she ever wrote and decided to wing it with this one。 Her own characters seem to be everything they weren't in all her previous works。 The ending is disappointing， she cut down her （already very minimal） neuroatypical representation， uses women's pain as plot point on every step。 This honestly reads like a very badly written fanfiction on wattpad， this is extremely disappointing。 。。。more
